Former Kano State governor and immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has launched a scathing attack on his political rival, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, warning that if the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) leader and his loyalists return to the APC, they would be received “as madmen who swallowed their vomit.”
Speaking during a high-powered APC stakeholders’ meeting in Kano on Thursday — his first major political outing since leaving office — Ganduje dismissed growing speculation that Kwankwaso was plotting a comeback to the ruling party. He accused his estranged ally of lacking political consistency and mocked his past comments ridiculing the APC.
> “Kwankwaso once said only a madman would join APC. He even mocked President Tinubu during the campaign, claiming Tinubu only developed Lagos. Now they want to return. If they come, we will welcome them as madmen who swallowed their vomit,” Ganduje declared.
The former governor, in a BBC Hausa interview in Kaduna on Saturday, further likened political inconsistency to criminality.
“In democracy, there is little difference between a fake cleric and a thief,” he said, stressing that leaders who lack loyalty cannot be trusted with governance.
Turning his guns on his successor, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano, Ganduje accused him of running a government built on vendetta and waste. He said unlike Yusuf, he never wasted time probing his predecessor but immediately focused on delivering governance.
> “This government has no grip on governance. It’s like comparing a messenger with a permanent secretary. Theirs is a government of vendetta, bandits, clumsiness, and confusion. They have received more money in six months than I saw in eight years, yet they cannot point to achievements. They spend recklessly on projects without value for money,” Ganduje blasted.
Despite the fiery outbursts, Ganduje left the door open for reconciliation with his rivals, Kwankwaso and former governor Ibrahim Shekarau, if unity is deemed necessary for Kano’s stability. He noted that all three had vast governance experience that could be harnessed to guide the current political landscape.
Addressing his removal as APC National Chairman, Ganduje struck a conciliatory tone, insisting it was purely a matter of zoning and political balancing within the party.
> “The President did not wrong me. Leadership is by God’s will; He gives it to whom He wants at any time,” he said.
