The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has sounded the alarm, cautioning Nigerians to brace for heavy rainfall and strong winds sweeping across several states from Friday, September 26 to Sunday, September 28, 2025.
In its impact-based weather forecast released Thursday, NiMet warned that parts of Yobe, Katsina, Kebbi, Gombe, Borno and Sokoto face a moderate risk of strong winds, which could uproot trees, damage weak structures, and displace vulnerable communities.
The agency further projected that on Saturday, September 27, Taraba, Benue, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River will witness moderate to heavy downpours, raising concerns of flash floods in flood-prone areas.
NiMet added that while Kano, Bauchi, Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, Yobe and Borno may experience lighter showers, residents should remain vigilant as strong winds could still trigger localized hazards.
By Sunday, September 28, NiMet predicts that southern Taraba, Benue and Cross River will continue to experience heavy rainfall, while other regions are expected to record light to moderate showers.
The agency urged residents, farmers, transport operators, and disaster management agencies to take precautionary measures, stressing that weather-related risks could escalate if warnings are ignored.
“The predicted strong winds could cause displacement of people, damage to weak structures, and falling of trees,” NiMet cautioned.
With the rainy season still in full swing, experts have advised communities in vulnerable regions to stay alert, avoid flooded areas, and adhere strictly to safety advisories to prevent loss of lives and property.
