Tinted Glass Crackdown: IGP Warns Police Against Extortion As October 2 Enforcement Looms

With the nationwide enforcement of tinted glass permits set to commence on October 2, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to officers across the country, particularly in Lagos, cautioning them against turning the exercise into a money-making venture through extortion.

Speaking at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja yesterday, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh relayed the IGP’s directive, reminding personnel that enforcement of the law must be carried out with professionalism and strict adherence to citizens’ rights.

Jimoh, who addressed officers ranging from divisional levels to headquarters, stressed that any policeman caught harassing or extorting motorists under the guise of tinted glass enforcement would face severe disciplinary action as provided for in the Police Act.

> “Enforcement should not be used as a means of extortion against members of the public. The portals for registration have been open for several months now. After registering, citizens are only required to visit the police command or any formation for data capturing. No one should pay a dime to obtain a tinted glass permit,” he said.

The commissioner urged motorists to resist illegal demands and report any officer who attempts to collect bribes. He assured Lagos residents that the command would be on its best behaviour throughout the exercise, adding that channels are available for reporting misconduct for prompt action.

Jimoh’s warning follows a strategic policing conference held in Abuja, where the IGP directed all commands nationwide to balance strict law enforcement with respect for human rights.

The October 2 enforcement is expected to be one of the most far-reaching operations against unauthorized use of tinted glass on Nigerian roads, and the police hierarchy has promised to ensure that officers carry it out without fear, favour, or extortion.
