Panic gripped Kopre village in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Thursday after suspected Boko Haram fighters stormed the community and abducted a teenage boy.
The victim, identified as Azura Ayuba, 18, was whisked away by insurgents while fetching firewood in the bush alongside his friend, Augustine, 17, at about 1:25 p.m. Augustine narrowly escaped and raised the alarm, while Azura was taken into captivity.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, confirmed the incident, revealing that the insurgents, numbering about 20, ambushed the boys. He said:
> “The insurgents abducted both boys, but Augustine managed to escape and returned home, while Ayuba was taken away. On receipt of the report, troops of Operation HADIN KAI, alongside the Civilian JTF, immediately launched a manhunt to rescue the victim.”
Security forces have since intensified patrols in and around Kopre, mounting checkpoints and conducting aggressive search operations to intercept the abductors.
Residents, however, remain gripped by fear, with many avoiding trips into the bush even in broad daylight. Local authorities and community leaders have pleaded for a permanent security presence, stressing that the abduction underscores the persistent threat of Boko Haram in Adamawa’s rural communities.
Officials noted that in recent months, swift intelligence-sharing and rapid response had foiled several similar abduction attempts in neighbouring villages.
Makama urged vigilance, warning that:
> “Community cooperation remains crucial in the fight against insurgency. Sharing timely information can save lives and prevent further kidnappings.”
The abduction has reignited concerns over security lapses in remote areas. Residents have appealed to both the federal and Adamawa State governments to deploy additional troops and modern surveillance equipment to protect vulnerable communities.
The Adamawa State government, in a swift reaction, condemned the attack and reassured the public that every effort is being made to secure the teenager’s safe return.
Security forces, meanwhile, continue to comb the forests surrounding Hong LGA, maintaining heightened vigilance to forestall further incursions.
