In a dramatic twist at the National Assembly, security operatives have officially unsealed the office of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the embattled lawmaker representing Kogi Central.
The office, located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing, had been under lock and key for months following her controversial suspension earlier this year. The move now paves the way for the fiery Kogi senator to regain access to her workplace and resume legislative activities.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, a lawyer and vocal advocate of transparency, was slammed with a six-month suspension over alleged breaches of Senate standing rules—a decision that drew nationwide outrage. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Afenifere, and several civil society organisations condemned the action, branding it an attack on democracy and due process.
In July, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the suspension was “excessive, unconstitutional, and a violation of the senator’s fundamental rights.” Despite this ruling, the Senate leadership had stubbornly insisted she could not resume without a fresh resolution, further heightening political tensions.
With the dramatic reopening of her office, signs now point to an imminent return of Akpoti-Uduaghan to plenary, a development her supporters have long clamoured for. Her legal team maintains that she poses no risk and remains innocent until proven otherwise, as the case continues in court.
This development is expected to reignite political debates within the red chamber, where her return could shift dynamics ahead of critical legislative battles.
