Biu, Borno State — In a daring midnight encounter, troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East Operation Hadin Kai, working hand-in-hand with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), successfully repelled a Boko Haram/ISWAP attack on Kurnari village in Buratai District, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
The terrorists, numbering in large figures, stormed the village around 1:34 a.m. on Monday, unleashing sporadic gunfire to terrify residents. But their onslaught met fierce resistance from a patrol team stationed in the area, who immediately engaged the attackers in a heated gun duel.
Military sources confirmed to Zagazola Makama that reinforcements, personally led by the Commanding Officer of 135 Battalion, arrived swiftly at the scene, tipping the scales of the battle. The combined firepower of the troops and the CJTF overwhelmed the insurgents, forcing them to flee after suffering heavy casualties.
Recovered from the scene were assorted weapons and ammunition, further crippling the operational strength of the fleeing terrorists.
Residents of Kurnari, who had been awakened by the deafening sounds of gunfire, praised the gallantry of the troops for preventing what could have been another massacre.
Security analysts say the operation underscores the growing synergy between the Nigerian military and local vigilante forces, a cooperation that has continually frustrated terrorist activities in the Northeast.
