Political firebrand and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, has thrown a heavy punch at the six-month administration of former Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas in Rivers State, describing it as a cesspool of corruption that urgently demands a probe.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Okonkwo did not mince words in accusing Ibas of mismanaging the state’s resources during his brief stewardship, insisting that the people of Rivers State deserve to know how billions of naira allegedly vanished under his watch.
He zeroed in on one particularly shocking claim: a staggering ₦22 billion reportedly budgeted for the installation of CCTV cameras in the Rivers State House. For Okonkwo, the project is nothing short of a grotesque fraud.
> “₦22 billion was budgeted to put CCTV in Rivers State House. Are you trying to see the private part of an ant? What is the meaning of that CCTV? That is pure siphoning of Rivers State’s money. Ibas must be probed,” he declared, his voice dripping with outrage.
Okonkwo further criticized the Federal Government’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers, calling it “unnecessary, avoidable, and orchestrated by outsiders who have no stake in the destiny of Rivers people.”
> “This so-called state of emergency was uncalled for. All of them—whether Wike or Fubara—are from the same political family. They should have settled their differences internally. Instead, strangers decided the fate of Rivers State, and that is unacceptable,” he added.
With the bombshell revelations now dominating political discourse, pressure is mounting for a forensic investigation into Ibas’ six-month tenure. Many observers argue that if ₦22 billion could allegedly disappear into a phantom CCTV project, the scale of other hidden irregularities could be staggering.
