In a fiery outburst that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s political and security circles, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched a blistering attack on the Head of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Team, Akin Fakorede, branding him “a killer” and accusing him of gross misconduct against the Nigerian people.
Addressing journalists on Friday, Wike accused Fakorede of presiding over violence and intimidation during his time as governor of Rivers State, insisting that the officer’s name is synonymous with electoral brutality and police impunity.
“Let Nigerians know the truth. Akin Fakorede is not just a police officer; he is a killer. INEC themselves petitioned the Police about the atrocities he committed during elections. How can such a man still be allowed to operate freely within our security system?” Wike thundered.
The outspoken former governor alleged that Fakorede’s actions during elections in Rivers State were so egregious that even the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally lodged complaints to the Police. Yet, according to Wike, the petitions were swept under the carpet and no visible action was taken against him.
Wike, known for his combative political style, warned that Nigeria’s democracy was at risk if security operatives were allowed to serve as tools of political intimidation instead of protectors of lives and property.
“When those who are supposed to protect citizens become instruments of oppression, the entire system is compromised. We cannot continue to tolerate police officers who turn elections into battlefields and democracy into a blood sport,” he added.
Although INEC has not officially responded to Wike’s renewed allegations, sources confirm that previous petitions were indeed submitted to the Police regarding the conduct of security operatives in Rivers State during highly contentious elections. However, decisive disciplinary measures remain absent from public record.
Wike’s explosive remarks have reignited calls for greater accountability within the Police Force and may yet fuel fresh tensions between political leaders and security agencies ahead of future elections.
