The Federal Government has sounded the alarm over imminent floods, warning that torrential rainfall between September 19 and 23, 2025, could wreak havoc across at least 13 states of the federation.
The National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEWS Centre) under the Federal Ministry of Environment issued the alert in a statement signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department.
According to the warning, heavy downpours are projected to trigger dangerous flooding in several communities across the country. The affected states and flashpoint locations include:
Abia State: Arochukwu
Akwa Ibom State: Abak, Etinan, Ikot-Ekpene, Uyo
Bauchi State: Bauchi, Jama’‘a, Kafin-Madaki
Benue State: Ito, Vande-Ikya
Borno State: Dikwa
Cross River State: Edor, Ikom, Ogoja
Kano State: Bebeji, Gezawa, Gwarzo, Kano, Karaye, Tudun-Wada, Wudil
Kebbi State: Shanga, Yelwa
Kwara State: Lafiagi
Plateau State: Bukuru, Jos
Sokoto State: Isa, Makira
Yobe State: Dapchi
Zamfara State: Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi
The Centre urged governors, emergency agencies, and local communities to swing into action immediately, stressing that early preparedness could save lives and property.
> “Feedback from relevant stakeholders and state government representatives will be highly appreciated as we monitor this critical weather situation,” the statement read.
The warning comes amid concerns over increasing climate change–induced disasters across Nigeria. Experts caution that unchecked flooding not only displaces thousands but also destroys farmlands, worsens food insecurity, and poses severe health risks.
With the rains intensifying, residents in the listed states have been advised to remain vigilant, relocate from flood-prone areas where possible, and adhere strictly to safety measures.
