The Federal Government has sounded the alarm, warning that no fewer than 11 states across Nigeria may be hit by heavy rainfall and devastating floods this week, putting lives, farmlands, and communities at risk.
The National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment, in a notice issued on Sunday, urged Nigerians—particularly residents in vulnerable areas—to brace for impact and act swiftly.
States and Communities on the Flood Radar
According to the advisory, the following states and localities are expected to experience severe downpours and possible flooding:
Adamawa State – Ganye, Natubi
Benue State – Abinsi, Agyo, Gogo, Ito, Makurdi, Udoma, Ukpiam
Nasarawa State – Agima, Rukubi, Odogbo
Taraba State – Beli, Serti, Donga
Delta State – Umugboma, Umukwata, Abraka, Aboh, Okpo-Krika
Niger State – Rijau
Kebbi State – Ribah
Kano State – Gwarzo, Karaye
Katsina State – Jibia
Sokoto State – Makira
Zamfara State – Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Maradun, Gusau, Anka, Bungudu
Rising Rivers Pose Grave Danger
The warning also highlighted rising water levels in River Gongola, River Benue, and River Niger, cautioning that surrounding floodplain communities—from Numan in Adamawa to Lokoja in Kogi State—face immediate danger.
> “Communities on the flood plains of Rivers Gongola, Benue, and Niger are strongly advised to evacuate without delay,” the notice read.

The Federal Government has tasked state governments, emergency agencies, and community leaders to swing into action with early evacuation, relief support, and disaster response measures to minimize casualties and economic losses.
With weather patterns becoming increasingly unpredictable, experts warn that failure to heed this alert could result in catastrophic flooding, property destruction, and potential displacement of thousands of residents.
