In a bold move to deepen democratic participation and bring government closer to the people, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has appointed 1,200 political assistants across the state’s 236 wards.
The appointees, described as “change agents” and “custodians of grassroots democracy,” are tasked with amplifying civic engagement, ensuring seamless communication between the people and government, and delivering tangible democratic dividends to their communities.
Announcing the development in a statement, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, noted that the initiative reflects Abiodun’s unwavering commitment to inclusiveness and responsive governance.
> “Each ward in the state will now have five political assistants, carefully chosen to strengthen local participation, articulate community needs, and provide accurate feedback to government,” Akinmade explained.
According to him, the assistants will not only serve as the people’s direct link to the government but also help the administration actualize its promise of running a participatory, all-inclusive government where every voice matters.
He stressed that Governor Abiodun’s vision is to ensure that no ward is left behind in the state’s transformation agenda.
“The new appointees are expected to be the eyes and ears of the government at the grassroots level — mobilizing, listening, and delivering. They will be instrumental in bridging the gap between the state government and ordinary citizens, thereby cementing democracy as a government of the people, by the people, and for the people,” Akinmade added.
The state government urged the newly appointed assistants to live up to the expectations of their communities by actively contributing to the growth and development of their wards, local governments, and the state at large.
With this move, Ogun State has not only expanded the scope of political participation but also reaffirmed its determination to make governance a shared responsibility between the leaders and the people.
