YOLA — The Adamawa State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, in partnership with the Education in Emergencies Working Group (ELEWG), has joined the global community to celebrate the 2025 International Literacy Day at the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB) Hall, Yola.

The colourful event, held under the theme “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era,” showcased the state’s growing commitment to education, blending intellectual activities with cultural heritage.

In their separate remarks, Hon. Adiel Kurdah (Member I of the Board) and Dr. Aliyu Saadu (Member II) applauded Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his groundbreaking policies, particularly the free education policy from primary to secondary school, as well as the government’s assumption of WAEC and NECO examination fees. They credited these initiatives for placing Adamawa at the forefront of digital literacy and educational development in Nigeria.

“Adamawa State has emerged as a leader in digital literacy because the present administration gives education top priority in all its policies,” the board members declared.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Medugu Silvanus Stephen, State Coordinator of ELEWG, emphasized the importance of literacy in shaping progressive societies. He noted that the day has been consistently celebrated in Adamawa for nearly five years with strong government support, particularly from the State Agency for Mass Education and ADSUBEB.

Mr. Stephen hailed Governor Fintiri’s bold decision to allocate the largest share of the 2025 state budget to education, describing it as a visionary step towards building a knowledge-driven economy.

The celebration featured debates, quizzes, and intellectual presentations by students, offering a platform for young minds to demonstrate their creativity and brilliance. The atmosphere was further electrified by traditional dances and cultural displays, which added colour, excitement, and a sense of identity to the occasion.

As the programme drew to a close, Mr. Stephen announced that on September 9, 2025, Adamawa will also commemorate the International Day for the Protection of Education from Attack, with advocacy campaigns designed to safeguard schools and protect the right of every child to learn in a safe environment.
