Nigeria’s Super Eagles reignited their World Cup qualification campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Rwanda on Friday evening, thanks to a decisive strike from Tolu Arokodare in the 51st minute.
The encounter, played under high tension, saw the Eagles dominate possession and dictate the tempo, yet Rwanda’s disciplined defense proved difficult to break down. The first half ended goalless, with Nigeria’s early celebrations cut short after Victor Osimhen’s opener was ruled out for offside.
But just six minutes into the second half, the breakthrough finally arrived. Arokodare, showcasing his predatory instincts, pounced on a loose ball inside the box and rifled it into the net, sending the Nigerian supporters into raptures. His goal proved to be the game-changer as José Peseiro’s men held firm until the final whistle.
The win not only restored confidence in the Super Eagles’ camp but also reaffirmed Nigeria’s determination to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With the victory, the Eagles climbed higher in their qualifying group, keeping hopes alive amid fierce competition.
All eyes now turn to the next showdown—an electrifying clash against South Africa on enemy soil. The Bafana Bafana, buoyed by their own qualification ambitions, are expected to present an even sterner test. For the Eagles, however, the victory over Rwanda serves as the perfect momentum booster ahead of the trip to Johannesburg.
Speaking after the game, Arokodare dedicated his goal to the Nigerian fans: “This win means everything. We knew how important it was to bounce back, and now we’re fully focused on South Africa. We’ll fight for every point.”
With Osimhen’s injury concern still lingering and South Africa looming large, the stakes could not be higher. Nigeria’s road to the World Cup remains a battle, but with grit, passion, and timely goals like Arokodare’s, the Eagles are proving they are ready to soar.
