Shock and outrage have trailed the disturbing allegation against a serving Nigerian Police officer, identified as Inspector Bassey, who has been accused of luring and sexually assaulting an eight-year-old orphan in the Mabuchi area of Abuja.
The minor, identified only as Zahra, lost both parents and has since been under the guardianship of a medical doctor who has shouldered full responsibility for her welfare and education.
According to information exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters, the horrifying incident occurred on Thursday evening, around 5 PM, within a residential estate in Mabuchi.
Eyewitness accounts allege that Zahra had been innocently playing outside when Inspector Bassey reportedly tricked her into his vehicle before carrying out the heinous act.
“The matter was immediately reported, and the police took up the case. The girl was rushed to the hospital, where medical examinations tragically confirmed the assault,” a source close to the investigation told SaharaReporters.
The insider, who pleaded anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case, added that the guardian, deeply devastated by the incident, has been unwavering in providing care for Zahra since her parents’ death.
When contacted, the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said she was yet to confirm the full details of the case but promised to provide an update.
“I will find out and get back to you,” she stated briefly.
The shocking allegations have sparked fresh debates over police accountability and the growing concerns about the safety of vulnerable children in the country, especially when those meant to protect the public are themselves implicated in such monstrous acts.
