The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has felicitated with Muslims nationwide on the celebration of Eid-ul-Maulud, urging political leaders to seize the solemn occasion to promote justice, fairness, and policies that will ease the worsening hardship confronting citizens.
Eid-ul-Maulud, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), offers Muslim worshippers a moment to honour and reflect on the Prophet’s life, virtues, and teachings—values which CAN insists transcend religious boundaries and point towards a society anchored on peace, equity, and mutual respect.
In a statement signed on Friday by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN stressed that Nigeria stands at a defining moment, grappling with governance challenges, economic hardship, and the pressing demand for credible leadership.
“As our nation marks this occasion, we are reminded that Nigeria stands at a critical crossroad,” Okoh declared. “The challenges of governance, economic hardship, and the deep yearning for credible leadership call for renewed commitment to principles that promote fairness, accountability, and compassion.”
He further urged political leaders at all levels to embrace integrity in decision-making, adopt policies that strengthen national unity, and take deliberate steps to ease the crushing burden on citizens.
“Integrity and fairness must guide leadership if our nation is to realise its potential for peace and prosperity,” the CAN President added.
Extending warm wishes to Muslims for a peaceful and joyous celebration, CAN expressed hope that Eid-ul-Maulud would inspire stronger interfaith unity, deepen the bonds of national cohesion, and renew Nigeria’s shared commitment to justice and prosperity.
“On behalf of the Christian community, I extend warm wishes to all Muslims. May this Eid-ul-Maulud inspire stronger bonds of unity across faiths, renew our shared hope for Nigeria, and encourage us all to work together for a just and prosperous nation,” Okoh said.
The message comes at a time when Nigerians are grappling with the painful effects of fuel subsidy removal, skyrocketing food prices, and rising living costs. In recent months, religious leaders across both faiths have consistently called on the government to prioritize policies that cushion hardship, restore public trust, and build a more inclusive society.
Traditionally, Eid celebrations have served as a rallying point for national calls for unity, tolerance, and prayers. In previous Eid-ul-Maulud and Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, President Bola Tinubu and state governors have often used the occasion to call for interfaith harmony and collective resolve in overcoming the nation’s economic and security challenges.
