Nigeria’s political scene is bracing for a thunderstorm as Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has dropped a bombshell — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is secretly in talks with two of the country’s biggest political heavyweights: former President Goodluck Jonathan and 2023 Labour Party flagbearer, Peter Obi.
Mohammed, speaking in an explosive interview on Channels Television, confirmed that PDP governors are in advanced discussions with “celebrated politicians” across party lines as the opposition prepares a masterstroke to reclaim Aso Rock in 2027.
> “Have you not seen Obi with me several times? He’s my brother, my friend, and one of the most celebrated politicians today. Within the coalition or outside it, we are not sleeping — only that we don’t make noise,” Mohammed declared.
The revelation that Obi — who commanded massive youth support in the 2023 polls — is being courted by PDP has already set tongues wagging. Even more dramatic is the disclosure that Jonathan himself is being considered for a comeback. Mohammed confessed he had personally urged Jonathan to return, vowing to step aside if the former president decides to contest.
As if that were not enough, the Bauchi governor hinted at overtures to former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, raising the stakes in what appears to be a grand coalition strategy.
> “Amaechi is free to come back if he wants to. I have spoken to so many people, not just him or Obi,” Mohammed revealed.
With Jonathan’s legacy, Obi’s grassroots appeal, and Amaechi’s political weight potentially converging under PDP’s umbrella, Nigeria may be on the verge of witnessing one of the most dramatic political realignments since 1999.
