The Benue State House of Assembly descended into high drama on Friday as four lawmakers were slammed with a six-month suspension over an alleged conspiracy to impeach the Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh.
Our correspondent learnt that the embattled legislators were accused of holding a secret meeting at the Government House, allegedly plotting the Speaker’s removal barely three days after the House unanimously passed a vote of confidence in both Dajoh and Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The suspended lawmakers include Alfred Aondoaver (Makurdi North), Shimawua Emmanuel (Vandeikya II), Cyril Ikong (Oju II), and Abu Umoru James (Apa).
Moving the motion for their suspension, the House Majority Leader, Saater Tiseer, described their actions as a deliberate attempt to destabilize the legislature and undermine the unity of the state.
Tiseer thundered:
> “On Wednesday, 20 August 2025, this House, in the spirit of unity, passed a vote of confidence in our leadership and the Governor of Benue State. Yet, in less than three days, Hon. Alfred Aondoaver and three others went behind to mobilise colleagues in a plot to plunge this Assembly into chaos.”
The motion, swiftly adopted during a heated plenary presided over by the Speaker himself, resulted in the suspension of the four members for a period of six months.
In a twist that underscored the intensity of the session, the House also screened and confirmed four out of the eight commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Alia, leaving political watchers speculating about the balance of power within the administration.
The development has sparked ripples across Benue’s political landscape, with analysts warning that the suspension could deepen divisions in the Assembly even as the state grapples with pressing governance challenges.
