The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 62 people—27 men and 35 women—on allegations of indulging in immoral acts under the cover of heavy rainfall during a raid at the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) annex in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area.
The dramatic arrest, confirmed on Monday by the Deputy Commandant of the Board, Dr. Mujahid Aminuddeen, followed an intelligence tip-off and was executed in collaboration with operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
“On Sunday, our personnel, in a joint operation with NDLEA officers, apprehended 62 suspects at the NITT training centre in Dawakin Kudu after receiving credible intelligence from some good Samaritans,” Aminuddeen told Daily Trust.
According to him, the individuals were found “taking advantage of the persistent rainfall to engage in immoral activities.” He emphasized that the Hisbah Board would not fold its arms while people flouted Shari’a principles, urging members of the public to continue to report such violations.
In a separate operation, Hisbah operatives also raided Tamburawa Bridge, where several people were arrested for similar offences. All suspects are expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
This latest crackdown comes just two weeks after Hisbah arrested 26 women at a hotel in Kano metropolis following complaints from residents about alleged illicit activities at the facility.
Confirming that operation, Dr. Aminuddeen revealed that it was conducted in collaboration with military authorities, who provided strategic support. “We want to appreciate the military commanders for their cooperation which made the raid successful,” he said.
He added that many of the suspects were found intoxicated, with cartons of assorted alcoholic drinks recovered at the scene.
The Deputy Commander reaffirmed Hisbah’s commitment to sustaining the clampdown on what it describes as “immoral conduct” across the state. He further appealed to residents to promptly report suspicious activities in hotels, event centres, or private residences to aid their enforcement efforts.
> “This operation will be sustained. We are determined to rid Kano of immoral practices that contravene the values of our society and Shari’a law,” Aminuddeen declared.
With repeated arrests and intensifying surveillance, Hisbah’s operations underscore its unwavering resolve to police morality in the conservative northern state.
