A street car race in Ogun State turned into a horror scene on Monday afternoon when a high-speed contest over a mere ₦30,000 wager ended with five people dead, including three suspected internet fraudsters and two unsuspecting residents.
The tragic incident unfolded at about 1:40 p.m. near the Owolowo area of Ipara Remo in Remo North Local Government Area, when one of the competing vehicles — an unregistered Lexus — lost control and ploughed into a roadside shop.
According to community sources, the reckless contest was allegedly organised by a group of young men suspected to be internet fraudsters, locally known as Yahoo boys. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle, travelling at breakneck speed, veered off the road, smashing into pedestrians and a shop before embedding itself into a building.
“The car just flew off the road,” a source recounted. “Two people were killed instantly. The rest were trapped in the wreckage. We could only hear screaming and see lifeless bodies lying on the ground while rescue workers tried to pull out the survivors.”
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident, revealing chilling details of the crash.
“At about 13:40 hrs on 11/08/2025, a lone fatal accident occurred near the Owolowo area, Ipara Remo,” Akinbiyi said. “The unregistered Lexus, driven by an unidentified man with two other male occupants, was speeding towards Fidiwo when the driver lost control. The vehicle struck two residents — Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo — killing them instantly, along with the driver. The other two occupants later died in the hospital.”
The victims were first rushed to Isara State Hospital, but one succumbed to his injuries almost immediately. Another, referred to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, died the following day.
This deadly race came less than 24 hours after another fatal crash in Abeokuta, where a man was crushed by a moving Volvo truck after falling off a motorcycle along the Rounder axis.
The double tragedy has renewed calls from residents for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and a clampdown on illegal street racing in Ogun State.
