In a bid to ensure fairness, transparency, and national security, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has once again extended the grace period for the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit requirement—pushing the deadline to October 2, 2025.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the development in a statement on Monday, revealing that the decision was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The extension, he explained, comes in response to a surge in permit applications on the police’s official online portal.
According to Adejobi, the additional time is designed to allow “meticulous scrutiny” of applications so that only genuinely eligible motorists receive approval—an approach aimed at tightening national security while eliminating loopholes. He stressed that the delay will also give the Force ample time to refine both its digital and physical verification systems, ensuring the permit process is foolproof and free from abuse.
The Force spokesperson further urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any cases of extortion, hidden charges, or unauthorised processing through official police channels.
The Tinted Glass Regulation, initially introduced to combat crimes committed in vehicles with obscured interiors, has historically attracted mixed reactions—particularly allegations of arbitrary enforcement by some officers.
Notably, in 2022, the NPF suspended the issuance of permits pending the rollout of a centralised application system. The process was later revived with stricter verification protocols, marking a new era of accountability.
Reassuring the public, Adejobi emphasised that the Force is committed to striking the delicate balance between public convenience and robust security measures, ensuring that the regulation serves its true purpose: protecting lives and property without unduly inconveniencing law-abiding citizens.
