Former Jigawa State Governor and stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains the party’s most formidable choice to reclaim the presidency in 2027, calling on party leaders to rally efforts toward bringing him back into the fold.
Speaking on Friday’s edition of Politics Today on Channels Television, Lamido was emphatic that no other PDP figure from the South matches Jonathan’s experience, national appeal, and capacity to unite the country.
> “I think for the PDP now, they should try to woo him; he is their best bet. To me, he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him,” Lamido asserted with conviction.
The former governor described Jonathan as a leader who has already navigated the complex waters of Nigerian governance, worked harmoniously across political divides, and cultivated a style that blends humility with statesmanship.
> “He is most welcome, competent, and very qualified. To me, I welcome him into the PDP. With all due respect to other members, I don’t see a better alternative than Jonathan if the presidency is to return to the South,” Lamido said. “Who in the PDP today can challenge Jonathan in terms of experience, calmness, willingness to listen, and ability to build partnerships? I don’t see any.”
Lamido’s remarks come amid mounting speculation about Jonathan’s political future. Since his historic concession of defeat in 2015, the former president has maintained a relatively low public profile. Yet, whispers of his possible return have persisted, fueled by reports of discreet consultations and high-level lobbying within PDP circles.
While Jonathan himself has made no public declaration, political watchers believe the prospect of his comeback could significantly shift the dynamics of the 2027 race — potentially redefining the PDP’s strategy in its bid to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
For now, the ball appears to be in Jonathan’s court — and the PDP, if it heeds Lamido’s counsel, may soon be making its most audacious political play in years.
