A storm of outrage has swept across Nigeria following shocking revelations of mass failure in the recently released 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results. The outcry reached a boiling point after a report by Nigerian Stories on its official X handle (formerly Twitter) announced:
“BREAKING: WAEC Massive Failure – Parents of Students and Civil Society Groups Demand Immediate Cancellation of Papers.”
According to the trending report, an alarming number of candidates across the country recorded abysmal scores in critical subjects such as Mathematics, English Language, and the Sciences — prompting public outrage and fierce calls for urgent intervention.
Parents, educationists, and advocacy groups are now calling on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to nullify the affected results, citing allegations of systemic flaws, poor supervision, irregularities, and questionable marking processes.
“This is not just failure; it’s a national embarrassment,” said Hajia Fatima Lawal, spokesperson of the National Parents Coalition for Education Justice. “We demand a full-scale investigation and the cancellation of these unjust results. Our children are not failures — the system failed them.”
In some states, student unions and educational pressure groups have staged protests, accusing WAEC of failing to ensure fairness and transparency in the examination process. Online, hashtags like #CancelWASSCE2025 and #JusticeForStudents have been trending, with thousands demanding immediate redress.
WAEC is yet to issue an official response to the mounting allegations and cancellation calls. However, insiders reveal that the examination body may be under pressure to conduct a review of the marking scheme and address complaints of technical glitches that may have affected result uploads.
Education analysts have also weighed in on the controversy, warning that the credibility of Nigeria’s public examination system could be jeopardized if swift and transparent measures are not taken.
As the heat intensifies, all eyes are now on WAEC for answers — and action.
