From Stanley Mijah, Yola.
Governor Fintiri of Adamawa State has planned a major Clampdown on Violators of the state’s Development Plan who erect physical infrastructure on waterways to deliberately frustrate government’s laudable development policy.
This Threat followed the recent devastation caused by flood within the Yola Metropolitan which claimed no fewer than twenty-three Lives, destroyed property worth millions of Naira with Fifty-five Residents who sustained various degrees of injuries.
In a swift reaction to ascertain the cause of the flooding at Shagari Phase II, Tashan Sani, Sabon Pegi, Anguwan Tabo, Modirre, Ummare, Yolde-Pate, Sanda Fadama II and Ibnu Abbas after an unusual heavy downpour which lasted for over ten hours, the governor visited the scenes and directed the State Emergency Management Agency to provide immediate relief to the victims of the flood.
The governor also visited Bole Dam and the Minning Site to determine its influence on the Flood following widespread claims that the flooding may have been precipitated by the activities of mining and the rising level of water in the Dam.
The governor’s discovery at the Dam and Mining Site had ended public speculation that the mining activities and the Bole Dam are the major cause of the devastating flood as the governor was reported to have said that the water level at the Dam and the Mining activities was not enough to have stimulate the flood but blamed it largely on the blockage of waterways through the illegal erection of physical infrastructure on waterways.
The governor was said to have expressed bitterness and serious concern on the circumstances behind the flood and assured Residents that no individual found to have erected structures on the waterways will be spared no matter his status in the society.
A handful of the victims of the flood disaster who spoke to Aljazirah Nigeria commended the swift response of the state government and the intervention of security operatives who conducted rescue and evacuation operations to save lives and called on the Adamawa state Government to find lasting solution to the perennial flood.
Some of the Residents who spoke to our correspondent at the peak of the disaster said that some of their family members are missing.
Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Government has expressed dissatisfaction with the unsavory remarks from certain leaders particularly former vice president Atiku Abubakar that the government has neglected its people and exhibited signs of failure to be proactive in addressing the recent flood in the state describing the statement as a complete contradiction to the general response, cash and logistic support provided by the state government during and after the flood.
