A joyous wedding celebration turned into a scene of grief and horror on Friday afternoon in Unguwar Liman, Magama Jibia area of Katsina State, as a 10-year-old boy was tragically killed and a woman severely injured by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a member of the Nigerian Hunter Group.
The incident occurred around 2:50 p.m. during the wedding fatiha of one of the group’s members. What was supposed to be a festive occasion ended in chaos and mourning after the reckless discharge of a firearm claimed innocent lives.
The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Adamu Idris, reportedly fired a locally made rifle into the air—a dangerous and increasingly criticized practice that still occurs during social gatherings in some parts of Northern Nigeria. However, the bullet struck young Malam Yusuf in the stomach, fatally wounding him. A 25-year-old woman, Shamsiyya Salisu, was also hit in the waist by the same bullet.
Eyewitnesses said panic gripped the crowd as the victims fell, with residents and police officers rushing them to the General Hospital in Jibia. Tragically, doctors confirmed Yusuf dead on arrival, while Shamsiyya is currently battling for survival under medical care.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the harrowing event, revealing that the suspect has been apprehended. According to police spokesperson, a locally made rifle, one live cartridge, and one expended cartridge were recovered from Idris at the scene.
“Preliminary investigation is underway, and the suspect will be charged to court upon its conclusion,” a police source told SaharaReporters.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage across the community, with residents and civic leaders condemning the reckless use of firearms during celebrations. Many have called for urgent intervention by security agencies, religious authorities, and traditional institutions to outlaw celebratory gunfire before more innocent lives are lost.
“This culture of firing weapons to mark joyous occasions must end. It is irresponsible and deadly,” a community elder said. “Today, we mourn a child. Tomorrow, it could be anyone’s son or daughter.”
As the bereaved family prepares to bury their child, the community continues to grapple with the sorrow and anger that now overshadows what should have been a day of happiness.
