Mass Exodus Continues: Rep. Jamilu Muhammad Dumps PDP Over Cracks, Chaos, and Collapse of Credible Opposition

In a political development that further dents the image of the once-dominant Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Jamilu Muhammad, a serving member of the House of Representatives representing Kankara/Faskari/Sabua Federal Constituency of Katsina State, has officially severed ties with the party. His resignation letter, which reads like a damning indictment of the PDP’s internal decay, highlights deep-rooted disunity, betrayal by party members, and an alarming failure to provide effective opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Citing what he described as “deep reflection and wide consultation,” Hon. Jamilu said the PDP has lost its way, drifting from the ideals necessary to confront Nigeria’s pressing challenges. He lamented that the party, once a formidable platform for democratic engagement, has now become a shadow of itself, riddled with factionalism, inconsistency, and anti-party elements working at cross purposes.

“I write to formally tender my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately,” the lawmaker declared in his letter to the party’s ward chairman in Faskari Local Government Area.

He went on to express grave concern about the PDP’s dwindling relevance and its growing inability to stand as a credible and united opposition at a time when Nigerians are yearning for strong, principled leadership.

> “This decision did not come lightly. But after observing the PDP’s disjointed posture, especially during the recent re-run election in my constituency, it became obvious that the party no longer possesses the vision or unity required to challenge the ruling party or advocate meaningfully for the Nigerian people,” Jamilu added.

He specifically slammed some party leaders for engaging in anti-party activities during the Kankara/Faskari/Sabua re-run election, actions he described as a betrayal that further fractured the party’s base and demoralized loyal supporters.

> “More disappointing was the visible anti-party activities by some members of the PDP during the re-run election, which weakened our common front and exposed deep cracks that have remained unaddressed,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Hon. Jamilu hinted at aligning with reform-minded individuals from across the political spectrum to form a new coalition — one built on justice, progress, and unity.

> “It is time to move beyond party interests and fight for the future of our dear country. I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served under the PDP and for the relationships built over the years. But the time has come to pursue a more inclusive, visionary path,” he said.

Jamilu’s defection adds to the growing list of high-profile exits from the PDP. In recent weeks, the party has been rocked by a wave of resignations from its most prominent figures. On Wednesday, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, one of the PDP’s strongest pillars, announced his departure from the party. Barely 24 hours later, media mogul Dele Momodu also tendered his resignation.

Both men, alongside other disenchanted party faithful, have pledged allegiance to a new coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which they describe as a more viable and people-focused platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With defections mounting and internal crises festering, the PDP now finds itself at a dangerous crossroads — one that could determine its survival as a national political force or its final descent into irrelevance.
