“Buhari Appointed Me Without Ever Meeting Me – Gen. Irabor Pays Stirring Tribute to Late President”

In a powerful and emotional tribute, Nigeria’s former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky E.O. Irabor (rtd), has revealed that he was appointed to the nation’s highest military office in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari—without ever having met the late leader in person.

Speaking in a heartfelt eulogy following Buhari’s passing, General Irabor described the late president as “a good man, disciplined, and deeply principled.” According to him, Buhari’s leadership was defined by quiet strength, trust, and unwavering commitment to national service.

> “Before he appointed me as Chief of Defence Staff on January 26, 2021, I had never met him personally,” Irabor recalled. “Like many Nigerians, I knew him only from a distance—through the pages of history, media reports, and the reverence with which he was spoken of within military circles.”

Despite the lack of personal interaction, Irabor said Buhari placed complete trust in him, a gesture that left a lasting impression. The president’s words during the appointment were simple but deeply resonant:

> “I have never met you before, but I have heard of your performance. I hope you will not disappoint.”

General Irabor emphasized that Buhari never micromanaged his appointees and rarely second-guessed their decisions. Instead, he offered space, trust, and the kind of silent strength that inspired confidence.

> “In President Buhari, I encountered a man who said little but listened deeply. He would sit for hours, attentive and composed, never once calling for a break. I once asked him, half in jest, how he found the patience and strength. He only smiled,” Irabor said.

The retired military chief expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve under Buhari, saying the experience taught him invaluable lessons in leadership, resilience, and integrity.

> “To my Commander-in-Chief, my Principal – President Muhammadu Buhari, at the sound of the Last Post, rest well. You fought the good fight. May your soul find eternal peace in the bosom of the Almighty,” Irabor stated with emotion.

He also extended his condolences to the Buhari family, especially the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, describing the late president’s life of service as one characterized by “dignity, honour, and unshakable integrity.”

General Irabor’s revelation sheds light not only on the humility of a former military commander but also on the quiet, decisive leadership style of a president whose legacy remains a subject of national debate—yet is remembered with reverence by those who served him closely.
