Tragedy Averted: Police Rescue Elderly Woman From Suicide Attempt On Lagos’ Carter Bridge

In a dramatic and heart-wrenching moment on Friday afternoon, an elderly woman was rescued by operatives of the Lagos State Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) while attempting to leap into the lagoon from Carter Bridge.

The attempted suicide, which occurred around 12:20 p.m., was intercepted by vigilant RRS patrol officers who spotted the woman in distress and acted swiftly to prevent the tragedy.

She was immediately taken to the RRS Headquarters, where the Commander, CSP Shola Jejeloye, personally engaged with her. In a compassionate intervention, Jejeloye listened attentively as the distraught woman opened up about the challenges and emotional turmoil that pushed her to the brink.

Understanding the depth of her struggles, the RRS Commander facilitated a private meeting between the woman, her husband, and their 30-year-old son in a bid to mend fractured family ties and chart a path forward.

The closed-door family dialogue reportedly provided a healing space for reconciliation and emotional release. Following the meeting, CSP Jejeloye offered the woman heartfelt counsel and extended a cash donation to support her immediate needs.

Deeply moved by the intervention, the family expressed profound gratitude to the Commander and the RRS team for their timely response, emotional support, and humanitarian gesture.

The woman has since been released into the care of her husband and son, who pledged to offer her the necessary support and care going forward.

The Lagos State Police Command continues to urge residents to speak up and seek help when faced with overwhelming challenges, emphasizing that life—no matter how tough—is worth fighting for.
