A horrifying gun attack has shaken the Ogboji community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving 10 people dead and nine others critically injured after suspected armed assailants stormed a peaceful meeting of Ebonyi State indigenes.
The bloody ambush occurred on Monday evening when the attackers, travelling in two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), invaded the venue of the community gathering and opened fire indiscriminately on the unsuspecting attendees.
In a statement confirming the tragic incident, Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, described the attack as unprovoked and brutal.
> “The armed criminals arrived in two SUVs and attacked the gathering of a group unprovokedly, shooting sporadically,” Ikenga stated.
Emergency responders rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals, but 10 victims were confirmed dead, while the injured are currently receiving medical treatment. The deceased have since been taken to the morgue.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that a joint security team has now secured the area and launched an intensive manhunt for the fleeing attackers.
> “The police-led security team has taken over the scene and is working on actionable intelligence to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice,” Ikenga assured.
The heinous act has sent shockwaves across the southeastern region, with Ebonyi indigenes residing in Anambra expressing outrage and mourning the loss of their loved ones in what many described as a “cowardly and barbaric” assault on peace.
While investigations are ongoing, the incident has reignited calls for enhanced security presence in border communities and intensified intelligence gathering to combat rising cases of gun violence and lawlessness.
As the nation grapples with multiple security challenges, the Ogboji massacre underscores the urgent need for multi-layered security reform, community vigilance, and swift justice for victims of senseless killings.
