Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has lauded the resignation of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, describing it as a bold and honourable decision that sets a critical precedent for leadership in Nigeria.
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi reacted to the breaking news of Ganduje’s resignation, which the former Kano State Governor attributed to health challenges.
> “I must commend Dr. Ganduje for prioritising his health above all else,” Obi stated. “With his health reportedly in decline, it is both wise and honourable to step aside, knowing that he may no longer be able to render the level of service required by the party, the people, and the nation.”
Obi said Ganduje’s decision has inadvertently thrown a gauntlet before other public officials who, despite being physically or mentally unfit for their roles, cling to power at the detriment of national development.
> “By this exemplary action, Dr. Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally. I sincerely hope they take a cue from him,” Obi remarked.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that Nigeria, at this fragile and crucial point in its history, cannot afford leaders who are consistently absent due to frequent medical tourism, prolonged sick leaves, or age-induced incapacities.
> “The challenges confronting our nation today require leaders who are not only competent but also physically and mentally fit — leaders with the capacity and agility to respond decisively and promptly to pressing issues,” Obi emphasized.
> “We can no longer afford a leadership culture defined by absenteeism. These health-induced lapses are taking a serious toll on governance and national development.”
Obi concluded his statement by wishing Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement, praying for his recovery and well-being.
> “May God Almighty grant Dr. Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement. Indeed, a new Nigeria is POssible.”
Obi’s comments come amid growing debates around the fitness of some top officeholders and the urgent need for a generational shift and responsible leadership in Nigeria.
