Outrage in Ibadan: Three Police Officers Caught on Video Brutalising, Stripping Tricycle Operator in Broad Daylight

In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage, three police traffic officers in Ibadan, Oyo State, were caught on video brutally assaulting and stripping a tricycle operator, identified as Keke Moruwa, at the Idi Odo area near Felele.

The disturbing incident reportedly occurred in broad daylight on Friday, with eyewitnesses watching in horror as the officers—attached to the Felele Police Station—descended on the helpless driver. The victim was allegedly dragged out of his tricycle, savagely beaten, stripped naked, and hauled away in handcuffs—all without committing any known traffic offence.

A viral video obtained by SaharaReporters and shared by activist Oluwasina Alayo captures the harrowing ordeal. In the footage, one officer is seen kneeling on the victim’s neck—eerily reminiscent of the George Floyd tragedy—while the other two forcefully pinned him to the ground. Blood was visibly smeared across the man’s face and body as he writhed in pain.

Speaking with journalists after the incident, the traumatised operator recounted his ordeal:

> “I picked up a passenger near the UBA Bank. They approached me and asked me to park. As soon as I did, they started dragging the steering with me. Then they began to punch me repeatedly in the face. They deflated my tyres, took away my tricycle, and when I went to retrieve it, they returned, beat me again, stripped me naked, and smashed my face and neck.”

According to Alayo, the incident took place near the Idi Odo bus stop, close to the Challenge area. He confirmed that the officers are part of the Felele Police Division and that after the assault, the victim was swiftly taken to the station without any formal charges disclosed.

> “What they did to that man is inhuman. They beat him mercilessly and took him to the station as if he were a criminal. This is unacceptable and must not be swept under the carpet,” Alayo told SaharaReporters.

The tricycle operator insisted he had not violated any traffic rules, stressing that the traffic lights at the location were not even functioning at the time of the incident.

Efforts to get an official response from the Oyo State Police Command proved futile. When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer Adewale Osifeso neither answered calls nor responded to messages regarding the matter.

The video has since sparked a storm of condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians demanding immediate disciplinary action against the officers involved and calling for urgent police reforms to curb rampant abuse of power.

As the nation grapples with rising police brutality cases, this incident in Ibadan once again underscores the pressing need for accountability, justice, and a total overhaul of policing culture in Nigeria.
