“Nation Mourns Heroes: Nigerian Army Declares Three-Day Mourning for 17 Fallen Soldiers Slain in Niger Ambush”

In a solemn tribute to valour and sacrifice, the Nigerian Army has declared a three-day mourning period — from June 25 to June 27, 2025 — to honour the 17 brave soldiers who paid the ultimate price in a harrowing battle with armed bandits in Kwanar Dutse, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.

The tragic encounter, which occurred during a night-time operation on Tuesday, June 24, has sent shockwaves across the nation. According to the Nigerian Army, the ambush was executed by no fewer than 300 heavily armed terrorists who engaged the soldiers in a fierce, three-hour gunfight deep within the forest.

“This is a moment of deep sorrow for the Nigerian Army and the nation at large,” read a statement released on Thursday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele. “It is with profound respect that the Nigerian Army declares a three-day mourning period to honour the selfless service, courage, and dedication of these fallen heroes.”

As a mark of respect, all Nigerian Army formations and units have been ordered to fly the Army flag at half-mast throughout the mourning period.

The fallen soldiers were part of a joint ground-air offensive launched in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, based on actionable intelligence. The intelligence revealed that the terrorists were mobilizing through Kwanar Dutse forest with the intent either to launch coordinated attacks on vulnerable communities or to flee ongoing military operations in neighbouring Zamfara State.

SaharaReporters earlier revealed that up to 20 soldiers may have been killed in the ambush near Bangi. The military has since confirmed that 17 personnel were lost, while 10 others sustained injuries during the brutal confrontation.

Despite the ambush, the Nigerian Army has described the battle as a testament to the fighting spirit of its troops, noting that the terrorists suffered severe losses. “Multiple blood trails along the enemy’s escape routes strongly suggest heavy casualties,” the Army disclosed.

To ensure maximum disruption of the terrorists’ retreat, the Nigerian Air Force conducted targeted precision airstrikes on their withdrawal paths, effectively neutralizing several enemy positions and impeding further movement.

The Army’s declaration of mourning is not just ceremonial — it is a powerful symbol of national grief and reverence. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of our fallen comrades,” the statement added. “Their unwavering commitment and gallantry in the face of overwhelming odds will never be forgotten. These heroes died defending our country, and we will honour their legacy forever.”

As the flags fly at half-mast and tributes pour in from across the country, the Nigerian people stand united in grief — mourning the loss of heroes whose courage reminds us of the high price of peace and the enduring spirit of those who guard it.
