Tragedy in Kwara: Bandits Assassinate PDP Chieftain, Son in Night of Bloodshed

Gunmen suspected to be bandits unleashed terror on Lile village in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday night, killing a prominent businessman and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward leader, Alhaji Abdullahi Kpotun, along with his son in a failed abduction attempt that has plunged the community into mourning.

According to local sources who spoke with SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the heavily armed assailants stormed Kpotun’s residence under the cover of darkness and opened fire after their abduction plan met resistance. Tragically, both the PDP stalwart and his son succumbed to the gunshots.

“It wasn’t just his family. The bandits attacked another household in the village that same night and killed another person,” the source revealed, painting a grim picture of a community under siege.

The Kwara State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Repeated attempts to reach the command’s spokesperson, Ejire-Adeyemi Adetoun, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.

This latest assault follows a series of coordinated attacks across the Kwara North Senatorial District. On June 3, 2025, gunmen carried out deadly raids on Patigi and Ndanaku communities shortly after Muslim worshippers concluded the Ishai prayer. The bloodbath left two people dead, including the Chief Executive Officer of Biskad Pharmacy, who was gunned down during an attempted kidnapping.

The rising wave of violent attacks has sparked widespread fear and anxiety in Kwara’s northern communities, where residents now live in constant dread of nightfall. Local leaders and security stakeholders have continued to call for urgent intervention by both state and federal authorities to halt the brazen and escalating insecurity.

As Lile village mourns the loss of one of its most respected leaders, the demand for justice—and protection—has never been louder.
