At least ten people are feared dead following a horrific auto crash that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday along the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Oyo State.
The fatal accident, which has sent shockwaves across the region, involved no fewer than seven vehicles, including three Nissan Micra commercial taxis and three articulated trucks. The gory scene unfolded near the Sanyo axis of the highway, leaving commuters and eyewitnesses in deep panic.
As of the time of filing this report, mutilated bodies were still being pulled out from the mangled wreckage, as emergency responders battled to manage the aftermath of the devastating collision.
Confirming the tragedy, the Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Rosemary Alo, disclosed that four people were confirmed dead on the spot, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries. One victim is currently receiving urgent medical attention at a nearby hospital.
In her words: “The crash involved seven vehicles. Four persons lost their lives instantly, while one victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment. We continue to emphasize the need for motorists to be extremely cautious and avoid reckless driving on this high-traffic expressway.”
Alo also confirmed that the remains of the deceased were deposited at the Adeoyo morgue located along Ring Road, Ibadan, while survivors who sustained no injuries found their way to their destinations.
Oyo Affairs, a prominent media outlet on social media, took to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle to share images and updates from the accident scene, sparking emotional reactions from the public.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Traffic Officer (DTO) of Sanyo Police Station, Oluwole Adesina, has taken charge of the accidented vehicles. According to the FRSC, one of the corpses was released to the victim’s family with the express permission of the Sanyo Division Police Officer.
The tragic incident has once again raised serious concerns over the alarming frequency of road crashes on Nigerian highways, particularly on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which remains one of the most accident-prone routes in the country.
Authorities are urging motorists to observe all traffic rules and prioritize safety over speed, as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
