In a shocking and deeply disturbing incident that has left an entire community in grief and disbelief, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Alexander Peter for allegedly hacking his 71-year-old mother, Mrs. Atiny Peter, to death with a machete.
The harrowing event took place in the quiet village of Ikot Inyang, nestled in the Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The suspect was apprehended on June 10, and the news was formally confirmed on Thursday by the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo.
According to CP Azare, the heinous crime was committed in cold blood, with the suspect allegedly using a machete to repeatedly strike his aged mother, leading to her tragic demise.
> “The suspect, Alexander Peter, was arrested on June 10 for the gruesome murder of his 71-year-old mother, which occurred at Ikot Inyang village. He allegedly hacked her to death with a machete. We are investigating to uncover the motive and full circumstances surrounding this horrifying act,” CP Azare said.
The shocking nature of the crime has sent ripples of fear and sorrow across the community. Neighbours and residents are struggling to come to terms with the brutal killing, describing the late Mrs. Atiny Peter as a peaceful and respected member of the community. Many have expressed disbelief that such an unthinkable act could be committed by her own son.

Meanwhile, CP Azare also used the press briefing to highlight the Command’s recent strides in combating crime across the state. He disclosed that over the past six weeks, a total of 54 suspects were arrested for various criminal offences ranging from armed robbery to cultism and murder. Additionally, more than 50 firearms and a substantial quantity of ammunition were recovered.
> “We remain committed to ensuring that Akwa Ibom is safe and secure for all residents. Our recent operations have led to the arrest of 54 suspects and the recovery of over 50 arms and rounds of ammunition,” the Commissioner stated.
As the state grapples with the chilling reality of matricide, the police continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
