Scandal in Benue: Governor’s Adviser Arrested by EFCC for Sexual Exploitation, Blackmail, and Cyberbullying

A wave of outrage has swept across Benue State following the arrest of Dr. Mkor Aondona, the Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Documentation, Research, and Planning, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Aondona is facing serious allegations of sextortion, cyberbullying, and blackmail—a scandal that has sent shockwaves through both political and academic circles in the state.

The EFCC confirmed that Dr. Aondona was apprehended on Friday, June 20, 2025, in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, after multiple petitions from distressed female students and young women. The petitions detail a disturbing pattern of sexual exploitation, in which Aondona allegedly used the promise of event ushering jobs to lure unsuspecting women into coerced sexual relationships.

According to the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the suspect was not only demanding sexual favors in exchange for job offers, but he also secretly recorded the acts without the women’s consent. He then used the explicit footage as a tool for blackmail, threatening to leak the videos if the victims refused to continue complying with his sexual demands.

> “The petitioners alleged that Aondona routinely targeted slim and attractive girls for ushering roles and insisted on sexual favours as a condition for selection. Unknown to his victims, he secretly recorded the sexual encounters and used the recordings to threaten and extort them,” the EFCC statement read.

Sources close to the investigation revealed that some of these explicit videos have already been circulated via social media and private messaging apps, compounding the trauma of the victims and raising urgent concerns about digital privacy and abuse of power.

Even more damning are revelations that this is not Aondona’s first brush with such allegations. While serving as a lecturer at Benue State University (BSU), he was reportedly sacked over similar misconduct. Yet, despite these troubling precedents, he was later appointed to a key advisory position in Governor Alia’s administration—a move critics now see as a grave lapse in judgment.

> “There is overwhelming evidence against him. He was sacked from BSU for the same offence, and now he’s doing it again in government. The governor has yet to act,” a source familiar with the matter told SaharaReporters.

The EFCC has indicated that Aondona will be formally charged to court in the coming days as investigations continue. Meanwhile, calls are growing louder from civil society groups and women’s rights organizations demanding his immediate dismissal from public office and a full-scale probe into how such a controversial figure was appointed in the first place.

The Benue State Government has yet to issue an official statement in response to the scandal, fueling speculation and public anger over what many see as a potential attempt to shield the embattled aide.

As the case unfolds, Nigerians are watching closely—demanding justice for the victims and accountability from those in positions of power who enabled such abuse to persist unchecked.
