A heart-wrenching tragedy struck Bauchi State on Saturday as a promising young police officer, Superintendent of Police (SP) Mustapha Garba, lost his life in a fatal car crash while on his way to his own wedding ceremony. The incident has cast a dark cloud of grief over the state’s Police Command and the entire community of Toro Local Government Area.
SP Garba, a dedicated and respected officer of the Bauchi State Police Command, was travelling from Gumau to Magaman-Gumau—his hometown in Toro LGA—where his wedding fatiha was set to take place. However, fate had other plans.
According to official reports, SP Garba was accompanied by three close friends in a Mercedes Benz when tragedy struck at Bargan Tsamiya. The vehicle reportedly lost control, veered off its lane, and collided head-on with an oncoming Opel Vectra. The impact of the crash was devastating.
Confirming the heartbreaking incident, the spokesperson of the Bauchi State Police Command, CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Sani-Omolori, immediately dispatched the Divisional Police Officer of Toro Division to the scene for rescue and evacuation.
“The Command is in deep mourning,” Wakil stated. “SP Mustapha Garba was on his way to attend the most joyful event of his life—his wedding—when the unfortunate incident occurred. He was in the company of three friends in a Mercedes Benz. At Bargan Tsamiya, the vehicle lost control and collided head-on with a Vectra coming from the opposite direction.”
Rescue efforts were swift, but sadly, they were not enough to save the lives involved. SP Garba and two of his companions were confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Toro General Hospital. The fourth occupant, along with the occupants of the Opel Vectra, sustained injuries of varying degrees and are currently receiving medical attention.
The bodies of the deceased have since been handed over to their families and laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
CP Auwal Sani-Omolori has expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, describing the loss of SP Garba as a colossal blow not only to the Police Command but also to the entire community he served with distinction.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected,” the Commissioner said. “We mourn a gallant officer whose life was cut short on a day meant to mark a new beginning.”
What was meant to be a celebration of love and union has now turned into a dirge of sorrow and unimaginable loss—a sobering reminder of the fragility of life.
