Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, speaking with grim resolve on Saturday, declared that Iran had crossed a dangerous red line after a barrage of missiles reportedly struck Israeli residential zones.
“If Ayatollah Ali Khamenei insists on launching missiles at the Israeli home front, Tehran will burn,” Gallant warned, using language that underscored the gravity of the moment and Israel’s readiness to escalate.
The fiery declaration came in the wake of Iran’s retaliatory missile attacks launched in response to Friday’s devastating Israeli airstrikes—an unprecedented assault targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile infrastructure, and top military leadership.
Iran’s envoy to the United Nations reported that at least 78 people were killed in the Israeli offensive, including civilians and high-ranking military officials. Among the casualties were Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces; General Hossein Salami, the powerful head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC); and Ali Shamkhani, a former national security chief. “Moments ago, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a strategic offensive to dismantle the Iranian regime’s nuclear program, missile capabilities, and the architects behind them,” Netanyahu stated. “This operation will continue for as long as necessary to eliminate the threat to Israel’s survival.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, responded with sweeping changes to the country’s top military leadership, confirming the death of multiple commanders in the Israeli strike. In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Khamenei described the fallen officers as martyrs and swiftly appointed new commanders to the IRGC, Armed Forces, and the elite Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, vowing revenge against what he called the “vile Zionist regime.”
“In view of Lt. Gen. Gholamali Rashid’s martyrdom at the hands of the Zionist regime, I appoint his successor to carry forward the struggle,” Khamenei announced.
Meanwhile, Iran has intensified its retaliatory attacks, launching dozens of ballistic missiles in recent hours. Iranian state television issued a chilling threat to regional powers: “Any military base aiding Israel—directly or indirectly—will be considered a legitimate target.” The warning appears directed at U.S. and NATO installations across the Gulf, potentially broadening the conflict’s scope.
