“I Was Naive, I Now See Clearly — Bello El-Rufai Makes Stirring U-Turn, Regrets Criticizing Jonathan”

Says He Asked His Father, Nasir El-Rufai, to Apologise to Former President on His Behalf

Bello El-Rufai, lawmaker and son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has made a dramatic and introspective reversal, publicly admitting that his past criticisms of former President Goodluck Jonathan were born of youthful ignorance and political naivety.

Speaking during a special edition of Channels Television on Thursday, the Kaduna North Federal Constituency representative recounted a moment of personal reckoning after witnessing his father seek a political audience with the former president.

> “I told my father that when he sees Jonathan, he should please tell him I’m very sorry, that I’m wiser now,” Bello said, reflecting on his evolution from a fiery critic to a more measured politician.

According to the lawmaker, the sight of Nasir El-Rufai preparing to consult Jonathan left him stunned and humbled, prompting deep reflection on the nature of power, leadership, and maturity.

> “I visited my father after becoming a member of the House of Representatives. I saw him in a polo shirt and asked where he was going. When he said he was heading to see President Jonathan, I paused,” Bello narrated. “It hit me hard. When I was younger and thought ego or gratification mattered, I was very active in criticising President Jonathan — harshly, even recklessly. I now realise I didn’t understand governance or leadership.”

The younger El-Rufai confessed that, like many politically active youths, he once viewed governance through a narrow and emotional lens, rather than appreciating its complexities and sacrifices.

> “Many young people fall into the trap of loud opinions without depth,” he added. “Back then, I even failed to acknowledge that we had functioning governance under Jonathan. It takes immense character—especially in Africa—to lose an election and willingly step down. He did that. It must be respected.”

His comments drew both surprise and commendation across social media, with many interpreting the statement as a rare gesture of political humility, especially within the often unforgiving landscape of Nigerian politics.

On the topic of electoral reforms, Bello El-Rufai expressed concern over rumours of an impending amendment that might permit voting without a voter card. He made his stance clear:

> “If that’s truly on the table, I will oppose it. Integrity in the electoral process must be protected.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker reaffirmed his support for deepening Nigeria’s electoral reforms, with particular emphasis on the electronic transmission of results — a measure many view as key to transparent and credible elections.

Bello El-Rufai’s candid reflections offer a glimpse into the evolving mind of a young politician, one seemingly learning from the past and beginning to grapple with the weight of national responsibility.
