Port Harcourt, Nigeria — The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has demanded an urgent and thorough investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killing of one of its students, Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science undergraduate, who was reportedly gunned down by a security operative in a chilling off-campus incident.
The tragic death, which has sparked outrage and grief across the campus, occurred outside university premises but has sent shockwaves through the UniPort community. In a statement issued on Sunday by the University’s Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, Dr. Sam Kpenu, the institution expressed profound sorrow over the loss and emphasized its commitment to uncovering the full truth.
> “The University is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event,” the statement read. “We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law.”
The slain student, described by classmates as intelligent, focused, and full of promise, was reportedly shot under unclear circumstances by a security personnel yet to be officially identified. As speculation swirls on social media and emotions run high, the University has appealed for calm and urged students and staff not to take the law into their own hands.
> “We appeal to members of the University community, especially our students, to remain calm and allow the relevant agencies to carry out their investigations,” the statement urged.
Dr. Kpenu extended the University’s deepest condolences to the bereaved family, promising that UniPort will continue to monitor developments and ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done.
> “We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all members of the UniPort community. No life should be cut short in such a senseless manner. We will do everything within our powers to ensure this never happens again.”
As of press time, the Rivers State Police Command has not issued a formal response to inquiries from Channels Television regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, tributes have begun pouring in from students and faculty, with many demanding justice and better protection for students living off-campus.
