Terror in Abraka: Ethnic Clashes Erupt After Police Kill Four Suspected Kidnappers in Deadly Gun Battle

Tensions boiled over into violent chaos in Abraka, Delta State, on Wednesday following a bloody police operation that left four suspected kidnappers dead and ignited deadly ethnic reprisals.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of the day in the Makati Bichi area near the railway station, was a joint offensive involving the police, local hunters, and anti-cult vigilantes. The team reportedly stormed a forest hideout based on credible intelligence about ongoing kidnappings and encountered heavily armed suspects believed to be of Fulani-Hausa origin.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspects opened fire upon sighting the security team, triggering a fierce gun battle that ended with four of them fatally shot. The police recovered an AK-47 rifle and 13 rounds of live ammunition at the scene. Alarmingly, some of the suspects were allegedly found in possession of ransom money, linking them directly to recent high-profile abductions in the region.

But what should have been a triumphant crackdown quickly spiraled into chaos.

As news of the suspects’ deaths spread, tensions flared. Northerners in the area, believed to be associates or sympathizers of the deceased, reportedly launched retaliatory attacks. A local resident told SaharaReporters, “They went into the bush this afternoon and attacked farmers, killing two innocent men. The bodies were later recovered by the police.”

What began as a counter-kidnapping operation soon morphed into ethnic violence, as some enraged Abraka indigenes accused the Hausa community of harboring criminals. “Indigenes are now attacking any Hausa person they see. They are threatening to burn down the Hausa Quarters by nightfall,” a source reported.

The community had already been on edge due to a wave of kidnappings that has terrorized students and locals alike. Just days earlier, students of Delta State University in Abraka staged a protest demanding government action and tighter security measures. One student told SaharaReporters, “Today’s violence is a result of the unchecked kidnappings we’ve been enduring. After the police killed the suspects, the Hausa community claimed they were innocent. Now, we’re seeing them roam the streets with knives and cutlasses.”

Graphic videos and photos circulating online show bloodied bodies lying in the streets, angry mobs wielding weapons, and terrified residents fleeing Hausa-dominated neighborhoods. Properties have reportedly been vandalized, and fears of a full-scale ethnic war loom large.

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the anti-kidnap operation but remained silent on the subsequent ethnic violence.

In an official statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the Command detailed the early morning operation: “Following credible intelligence on the activities of suspected kidnappers along the Abraka Railway axis, a joint team of police, local hunters, and anti-cult volunteers engaged the criminals in a gun duel. Four were neutralized, and one AK-47 with 13 live rounds was recovered.”

The statement further disclosed that one of the slain suspects was positively identified by a recent kidnap victim as the leader of the gang that abducted him.

However, there was no immediate comment from the police regarding the community backlash or preventive steps to quell the brewing ethnic tensions.

As dusk falls over Abraka, fear grips the town. Residents are calling for urgent intervention from state and federal authorities to prevent an all-out ethnic bloodbath.

“If you or your loved ones are in Abraka, please stay safe and indoors,” urged one student.

The situation remains highly volatile. Security agencies have reportedly increased patrols in the area, but for many, the damage has already been done. The town teeters on the edge of further violence, with deep ethnic mistrust threatening to unravel what little peace remains.
