In a heart-wrenching incident that has plunged an entire community into mourning, a 24-year-old pregnant woman, Hauwa Isah, was allegedly beaten to death by her husband in Minna, the capital of Niger State. Disturbingly, Hauwa was just weeks—if not days—away from giving birth.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command described the tragedy as both brutal and inhumane. According to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the fatal assault occurred on the evening of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at Bani Hashimu Estate in the Limawa ‘A’ area of Minna.
“We received a distress call around 10:30 p.m. regarding a woman found unresponsive and bleeding in her apartment. Operatives from A Division, Minna, promptly rushed to the scene, where the victim was discovered lying lifeless on the floor with visible signs of physical abuse,” DSP Abiodun stated.
She was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Minna, where medical personnel confirmed her death. Shockingly, it was also verified that Hauwa was approximately nine months pregnant, adding another layer of tragedy to the already horrifying incident.
The police have since arrested the prime suspect—31-year-old Mohammed Sani, the deceased’s husband—who lived with her at the same address. Authorities confirmed that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, for thorough investigation and potential prosecution.
Eyewitness accounts and sources within the community painted a disturbing picture of repeated domestic violence. According to neighbors, loud cries were heard from the couple’s apartment moments before the tragic discovery.
“This isn’t the first time he assaulted her. We’ve cautioned him several times, but he refused to change. Now, she’s dead—and with an unborn child,” one visibly shaken resident lamented.
The death of Hauwa Isah has triggered an outpouring of grief and outrage both online and within the local community, with many calling for swift justice and more robust protection for victims of domestic violence.
As the investigation unfolds, questions continue to swirl about how such repeated abuse could escalate to such a tragic end—claiming not just one, but two innocent lives.
This incident once again brings to the forefront the urgent need for stronger domestic violence laws, public awareness, and intervention mechanisms to protect vulnerable individuals, especially women in abusive relationships.
