In a decisive move reflecting deepening security concerns, the Kano State Police Command has reaffirmed its ban on all Durbar-related activities during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. The directive, which extends to all corners of the state, underscores what authorities describe as persistent and credible security threats that could jeopardize public peace.
In a joint statement issued in collaboration with other security agencies, the police extended warm Sallah greetings to Muslim faithful and law-abiding residents while issuing a stern call for strict adherence to public safety directives.
“The threats that necessitated the initial suspension of Durbar during Eid-el-Fitr remain very much active and unneutralised,” the statement read. “Intelligence reports point to a coordinated plot by miscreants and their sponsors to exploit the Durbar celebration and unleash chaos across Kano.”
Durbar, a centuries-old cultural and religious procession involving royal horseback riding and traditional displays, is a cherished part of Kano’s heritage. However, the police argue that it is precisely this high-profile nature that makes it a potential target for disruption.
Security assessments suggest plans by subversive elements to hijack the festive processions and provoke public disorder, similar to attempts recorded during the last Eid festivities.
To mitigate any potential breakdown of law and order, the Command has announced a range of restrictions that will be strictly enforced:
A complete ban on horse and animal riding (Kilisa) during the celebrations;
Prohibition of car racing and reckless driving within city limits and public gatherings;
Outlawing the possession or public display of firearms and weapons, licensed or otherwise;
Strict surveillance for suspicious items or dangerous objects in all public spaces.
In a particularly strong message to families, the police advised parents and guardians to closely monitor their children, warning that youth remain targets for radical recruitment by destabilizing agents.
“Let it be clear: any attempt to violate these restrictions will be met with the full weight of the law. Security personnel are under strict orders to enforce every directive to the letter,” the statement emphasized.
As the city prepares for Eid, the Command urged residents to focus on the spiritual significance of the holiday and resist any attempt to politicize or weaponize the season.
“Let us celebrate in peace and unity. Let our prayers ascend for Kano State, for our nation Nigeria, and for the souls of the young athletes tragically lost in a recent road accident returning from the National Sports Festival,” the statement added solemnly.
Notably, the announcement comes mere hours after the Kano Emirate Council issued a circular inviting traditional leaders and their entourages to participate in the customary Sallah Durbar festivities — a move that now stands at odds with the police directive and may spark a tense standoff between cultural custodians and security enforcers.
As the Eid-el-Kabir holiday approaches, all eyes remain on Kano — a city where heritage, faith, and the fight for stability are once again colliding on the grandest of stages.
