Gangpan: TY Danjuma Honoured as the ‘Shield’ of Ganye at Grand 25th Anniversary of Gangwari

In a spectacular celebration that transformed the serene town of Ganye into a bustling hub of culture, royalty, and national significance, dignitaries from across Nigeria gathered on Saturday, May 31, 2025, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Gangwari Ganye, Alhaji Umaru Adamu Sanda OON FIAMN.

The ancient chiefdom, nestled in Adamawa State, came alive as it hosted a mammoth crowd of well-wishers, traditional rulers, politicians, and statesmen in what has been described as one of the most colourful and historic events in its annals. Among the notable figures who graced the ceremony was Nigeria’s revered elder statesman and retired military general, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (Rtd.), whose presence stirred deep admiration and pride.

In a symbolic and culturally significant move, General TY Danjuma was conferred with the traditional title “Gangpan”, a Hausa word meaning “Garkuwa” or “Shield” in English—an honour that signifies protection, strength, and unwavering support to the people of Ganye and beyond. The title, laden with historical and spiritual meaning, positions Danjuma as a revered guardian figure of the chiefdom, further solidifying his legacy as a national hero and custodian of peace.

The event, which was both royal and festive, marked a quarter-century reign of the Gangwari Ganye, whose leadership has been widely celebrated for bringing development, unity, and cultural preservation to the Ganye chiefdom. The overflowing crowd, traditional displays, and the electric atmosphere bore testimony to the respect and admiration the people hold for their monarch.

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, also attended the event, commending both the Gangwari and General Danjuma for their roles in preserving peace, fostering development, and nurturing traditional institutions as critical partners in governance. Fintiri described the conferment of the title “Gangpan” on TY Danjuma as a well-deserved recognition of a living legend who has continued to shield communities with wisdom, generosity, and courage.

“This celebration is not only about the longevity of a ruler but about the resilience of a people, the strength of tradition, and the importance of visionary leadership,” Governor Fintiri declared, adding that Ganye is now firmly placed on the national map as a beacon of cultural pride and communal unity.

As drums echoed, horsemen paraded, and traditional dancers enthralled spectators, the 25th anniversary celebration served as both a reflection on the achievements of Gangwari Umaru Adamu Sanda’s reign and a forward-looking affirmation of Ganye’s growing role in the sociopolitical tapestry of Nigeria.

With General TY Danjuma now holding the revered title of “Gangpan Ganye”, the shield of the chiefdom, this milestone celebration will be etched in the hearts of the people for years to come—an embodiment of legacy, honour, and the enduring strength of tradition.
