Tragedy in Pursuit: Two Drown While Chasing Debtor in Kano, Fire Service Rescues Others in Separate Incident

In a harrowing twist of fate, two young men lost their lives on Tuesday morning while in pursuit of a debtor in Kano State. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that the victims drowned in a waterlogged ditch along the Ring Road, directly opposite Dorayi Babba.

According to a statement released by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Controller of Fire Operations (ACFO) Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the incident was reported at precisely 9:36 a.m. by a concerned citizen, Garba Sani.

The deceased—27-year-old Saifullahi Muhammad and 29-year-old Halifa Abdullahi—were both residents of Gwammaja Quarters. Eyewitnesses say the two were chasing a man who owed them money from Kofar Ruwa Market when they slipped and fell into the deep, rain-flooded ditch.

“Our rescue team from the headquarters responded without delay and pulled the two men from the water, unconscious,” ACFO Abdullahi stated. “They were quickly transported to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, but sadly, medical personnel confirmed both of them dead on arrival.”

Their remains were subsequently handed over to Inspector Halifa Muhammad of the Kuntau Police Division as investigations continue into the tragic turn of events.

In a separate but equally tense rescue earlier the same day, the Fire Service also responded to an emergency call at 6:01 a.m. from SFS Usman Aminu, regarding two well-drainers who had become trapped inside a deep well in Danmaliki village, near Chalawa Filling Station.

The victims were reportedly working inside the well when they were overcome by heat and suffocating conditions due to a lack of oxygen. Fortunately, the swift action of the rescue team ensured a different outcome.

“They were rescued conscious and in stable condition,” the Fire Service PRO confirmed. “The victims were handed over to the Ward Head of Danmaliki, Alhaji Ali Alkasim.”

In light of the incidents, the Kano State Fire Service has issued a public advisory urging residents to remain vigilant around open water bodies, ditches, and wells, especially during the rainy season, when water levels can rise dangerously. The agency emphasized the importance of reporting emergencies promptly to prevent further loss of life.

These twin incidents serve as a stark reminder of how quickly everyday activities can turn tragic—and how vital community awareness and timely emergency response remain in safeguarding lives.
