In a heart-wrenching tragedy that has left the Abia State community in shock, a 40-year-old man, Mr. Udochi Amala, allegedly set himself, his wife, and their three children ablaze over unproven suspicions of infidelity. The horrifying incident occurred between 1am and 2am on Saturday in Onicha Ngwa community, Obingwa Local Government Area of the state.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the gruesome act unfolded when Mr. Amala, in a fit of rage, doused his entire family—his wife, Mrs. Amarachi Amala, and their three innocent children—with petrol and lit the match that turned their home into a fiery hell.
Tragically, one of the children, a young daughter, was burnt to death on the spot. The remaining victims, including the mother and two other children, were rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Unconfirmed sources later revealed that they succumbed to their injuries on Monday, despite frantic efforts to save their lives.
The family hails from Amapu Ihe village in Osisioma Local Government Area but resided in the Onicha Ngwa community, where the catastrophe occurred.
In a chilling confession to investigators, Mr. Amala reportedly said, “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life.” He further admitted to having no concrete evidence of his wife’s alleged unfaithfulness—a revelation that underscores the senselessness of the bloodcurdling attack.
After setting the family ablaze, Udochi reportedly tried to flee the scene but was overpowered and detained by shocked community members before the arrival of law enforcement officers. He is currently in custody as investigations continue.
The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Speaking to reporters, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, stated, “Yes, the police are aware. Investigation is ongoing.”
In response, the Abia State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has expressed profound outrage and grief, condemning the act as a heinous crime and a gross violation of fundamental human rights.
A statement jointly signed by FIDA Abia Chairperson, Barr. Njideka Aniawonwa, and Secretary, Barr. Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, read:
“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this horrific act. FIDA Abia calls for a thorough investigation and immediate prosecution of the perpetrator. Justice must be served, and adequate support must be provided for all victims and survivors of domestic violence.”
FIDA further called on the government and relevant authorities to urgently bolster legal and social frameworks to protect women and children from abuse, and implored citizens to speak up and report any suspected cases of domestic violence before they spiral into irreversible tragedy.
As the community mourns and the nation watches in disbelief, this gruesome incident reignites the urgent call for justice, protection, and a societal stand against domestic terror.
