In a dramatic twist of deception and eventual justice, operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command have apprehended a suspected motorcycle thief, Abiodun Eniola, who cunningly disappeared with a brand-new motorcycle under the pretense of a test ride.
According to police sources, Eniola had strolled into a motorcycle dealership in Iworoko-Ekiti, presenting himself as a genuine buyer. After engaging the unsuspecting dealer in negotiation, he requested a test ride — a routine practice that would soon turn into a calculated heist.
Once granted permission, the suspect rode off on the unregistered motorcycle and never returned, leaving the dealer baffled and the motorcycle vanished without a trace.
However, the joyride was short-lived. On May 10, 2025, Eniola’s luck ran out when eagle-eyed officers of the Safer Highway Unit intercepted him during a routine stop-and-search operation. The stolen motorcycle was recovered in his possession.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, said the suspect admitted to the crime during interrogation.
“Investigations revealed that the suspect visited the dealership pretending to be a potential buyer. He negotiated and requested a test ride, but his real intent was to steal the motorcycle,” Abutu said. “He has since confessed and will be charged to court accordingly.”
The Ekiti State Police Command used the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to protecting lives and property, warning business owners and the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics of criminals and the critical need for increased caution in everyday business transactions.
