“May 30 Showdown: Police Reject IPOB’s Lockdown Order, Urge Anambra Residents to Defy Sit-At-Home Directive”

In a bold pushback against the Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) planned May 30 sit-at-home directive, the Nigerian Police Force has declared its unwavering stance to maintain law and order, urging residents of Anambra and across the South-East to disregard the lockdown and go about their lawful activities without fear.

The proscribed separatist group, IPOB, had issued a sweeping order for a complete shutdown across the region to mark its annual Biafran Heroes and Heroines Remembrance Day—an occasion meant to honour the fallen fighters of the defunct Biafran Republic during the Nigerian Civil War of 1967–1970.

According to IPOB, the lockdown will span 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will affect all forms of movement—land, air, and sea. The group warned that no human activity would be permitted within the self-declared “Biafran territory,” and announced a halt to commercial, religious, and educational operations.

However, in a strong counter-message, the Anambra State Police Command dismissed the directive and reassured citizens of their safety. Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, made it clear that the command is not aware of any official order restricting movement and is fully prepared to secure the lives and properties of citizens.

“We are not aware of the lockdown order,” SP Ikenga stated. “However, we are assuring the good people of Anambra State of adequate security and urge them to go about their lawful businesses without entertaining any fear. The police will not compel anyone to leave their home, but we will ensure the safety of those who choose to engage in their daily activities.”

IPOB, through its spokesperson Emma Powerful, emphasized that May 30 is a sacred day for Biafrans globally. In a lengthy statement, Powerful said the group will be hosting memorial lectures both locally and internationally throughout the month of May, culminating in the total lockdown on May 30.

“The IPOB family and movement inform Biafrans, supporters of Biafra, and lovers of freedom that May 30, 2025, is declared a public holiday and lockdown across the South-East in honour of Biafran heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice for our survival,” Powerful said.

The group called for the closure of schools, markets, banks, churches, mosques, and all public gatherings. IPOB has even reached out to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), urging it to adjust its examination timetable to avoid clashing with the sit-at-home directive.

Powerful further instructed Biafrans in the diaspora to organize town hall meetings, processions, and peaceful demonstrations to show solidarity with the movement’s cause. He also paid tribute to notable figures in the Biafran struggle, including Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Gen. Philip Efiong, Chief Dr. Frank Opigo, and Commander Ikonso.

“IPOB and Ndigbo across the globe will honour all our fallen heroes who resisted the genocide and suppression of our people by Nigerian and British forces and their allies,” he declared.

In a chilling warning, Powerful added, “We advise everyone to stay indoors on May 30 to avoid any form of confrontation or stray bullets from security operatives. Only essential service providers like doctors, nurses, ambulance operators, journalists, and NUPENG members will be exempted.”

It will be recalled that a similar event in 2024 led to violent clashes, particularly in Abia State, where several security operatives were reportedly killed in ambush attacks linked to separatist activities.

Undeterred, the Nigerian police have promised to deploy sufficient manpower and intelligence to prevent any breach of peace or violence. “We will ensure that every law-abiding citizen is protected,” SP Ikenga reaffirmed.

As the date draws closer, tension simmers across the region. While IPOB prepares for solemn remembrance, the authorities are determined to uphold constitutional order—setting the stage for yet another showdown in the volatile South-East.
