The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially announced that the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will be released on Friday, May 9, 2025, at exactly 8:00 AM. The much-anticipated announcement will be made from the JAMB National Headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, according to a statement issued to journalists on Thursday.
With over 1.9 million candidates sitting for the exam nationwide, this year’s UTME results are expected to shape the academic futures of millions of young Nigerians vying for admission into the nation’s universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
The UTME, scored over 400 marks, tests candidates on four subjects — Use of English (compulsory for all) and three others relevant to their chosen courses of study. However, preliminary data released by JAMB paints a troubling picture: more than 1.5 million candidates scored below 200, a score widely regarded as the benchmark for competitive university admission.
Reacting to the statistics, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed mixed feelings, describing the widespread underperformance as a sign of the federal government’s clampdown on examination malpractice taking effect.
> “The high failure rate in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is clear evidence that the government’s anti-malpractice measures are yielding results, especially within the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board system,” Dr. Alausa stated.
Analysts believe that the implementation of stricter biometric verification, real-time CCTV monitoring, and increased scrutiny of CBT centres may have contributed to the dramatic drop in performance, potentially exposing candidates who relied on fraudulent means in previous years.
Despite the grim statistics, education stakeholders are hopeful that the integrity of the examination process will continue to improve, ultimately raising academic standards across the board.
