In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves across Lagos, the State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Mrs. Adeola Adewale, for allegedly poisoning a 65-year-old man, identified as Mr. Adebayo, to death inside a service apartment in the Abule-Egba area.
According to a statement by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the tragic event unfolded on March 27, 2025, when Mrs. Adewale and the deceased checked into a short-let apartment together. What began as an ordinary evening quickly spiraled into a deadly plot.
Barely hours after their arrival, Adeola allegedly left the apartment in possession of Mr. Adebayo’s vehicle and personal belongings, casually informing the housekeeper that she would return shortly. However, her return never materialized.
The following day, March 28, during a routine inspection, the housekeeper stumbled upon the lifeless body of Mr. Adebayo. Alarmed by the grim discovery, the management contacted the Oko-Oba Police Division, prompting an immediate investigation. Officers at the scene recovered an empty syringe, two discarded cans of malt drink, and two bottles of water — grim evidence that fueled suspicions of foul play.
Following what CSP Hundeyin described as a “detailed and painstaking” investigation led by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Adeola was tracked down and apprehended at about 9:30 p.m. on April 26, 2025, in the Oko-Oba area of Lagos.
In a stunning revelation during interrogation, Adeola allegedly confessed to lacing a malt drink with a poisonous substance, which she served to Mr. Adebayo, leading to his untimely death.
“During questioning, Mrs. Adewale confessed to administering a malt drink laced with a deadly substance to the deceased, resulting in his death. Further investigations confirmed the identity of the victim as Mr. Adebayo, aged 65,” Hundeyin stated.
The suspect remains in custody as investigators continue to piece together the full circumstances surrounding the heinous crime.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Owohunwa Olohundare Jimoh, commended the SCID operatives for their swift and professional handling of the case. He reassured residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment to public safety and sternly warned that criminals, no matter how cunning, would be hunted down and brought to justice.
“Let it be known that Lagos State is not a haven for criminal elements. We will continue to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who seek to disrupt the peace of our society,” CP Jimoh vowed.
The remains of Mr. Adebayo were earlier evacuated and deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) mortuary, where a subsequent autopsy reportedly confirmed suspicions of poisoning, further strengthening the case against Adeola.
As Lagosians grapple with the unsettling news, the Police Command has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their communities.
