In a deeply unsettling incident that has left residents of Eagle Island in shock, Inspector Maxwell Zubu of the Nigerian Police Force has reportedly taken his own life in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Inspector Zubu, who was attached to the Rivers State Police Command, was serving as a personal security aide to a former Chairman of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area at the time of the incident. The tragedy unfolded in the usually quiet Eagle Island area, casting a pall over the neighbourhood.
While details surrounding the circumstances of the apparent suicide remain murky, police sources say the matter was promptly reported to the Eagle Island Police Post under the Azikiwe Police Division, Illabouchi, in Mile 2 Diobu.
A senior officer who spoke under the condition of anonymity revealed, “Policemen from the Azikiwe Division were immediately dispatched to the scene to commence preliminary investigations. The area was cordoned off, and initial findings have been documented.”
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the heartbreaking incident, noting that a thorough investigation has been launched to uncover what may have led to the tragic decision.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident. We have commenced a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding it. At the moment, the case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Port Harcourt for further inquiry,” Iringe-Koko stated.
The death of Inspector Zubu has raised questions within the force and among residents about the mental health and welfare of security operatives, especially those in high-pressure assignments. As investigations continue, many hope that answers will soon emerge — not just to provide closure to his family, but to ensure preventive measures for others in the future.
